How does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive procedure that removes the top layers of dead skin cells. A specialised tool is gently glided across the skin's surface using light suction to vacuum away the dead skin cells. It is a safe and effective treatment that can be used on areas close to the eyes and over the lips. We use a medical-grade diamond tip machine for all our microdermabrasion treatments to achieve the best results. Diamond tip machines are less irritating to the skin and provide a more precise and controlled treatment.

What areas can be treated with Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion can be performed on various parts of the body, including the face, neck, décolletage, and hands. It is commonly used to treat these areas to exfoliate and improve the skin's texture and appearance. Additionally, microdermabrasion can be used on other parts of the body as needed to address specific skin concerns.

How many treatments do I need?

For best results, treatments are performed ongoing for general skin health, improved product absorption and maintenance.

How often can a Microdermabrasion treatment be performed?

Microdermabrasion treatments can typically be performed at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks apart. The skin's natural renewal process takes around 28 days, so scheduling treatments within this timeframe can help maintain the benefits and keep the skin looking fresh and revitalised. Regular and consistent treatments can lead to cumulative improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

What is the downtime for Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion generally has minimal downtime. It is normal for the skin to appear slightly red, which can last a few hours or up to a day or so. Mild flaking and skin shedding are also common after the treatment. If acne lesions are treated, the area can appear red with mild scaling. These reactions are normal and will heal. Most clients experience a visible improvement in skin texture immediately after the treatment, with the skin looking smoother and fresher. You can apply makeup afterwards. After microdermabrasion, it is essential to protect the skin from UV rays as it becomes more sensitive to sun exposure. Applying sufficient SPF protection, like Skinstitut Age Defence 50+, is recommended to shield the skin from harmful UV rays without congesting the skin. All post-care and Skinstitut skincare products are available at the clinic to support the healing process and maintain the benefits of the treatment.

How do I prepare for Microdermabrasion?

  • A thorough consultation and patient assessment are necessary to determine suitability for the treatment.

  • If applicable, the treated area should be clean-shaven well before or at least 24 hours prior to the treatment.

  • Avoid sunburns and excessive UV exposure before the treatment.

  • If applicable to treatment area, clients with recent Botox and filler injections must wait 2 to 3 weeks (or as advised by their injection administrator) for all injectables to settle in before commencing the treatment.

  • If applicable to treatment area, clients should attend their appointment make-up free.

  • Active herpes, lesions, or other skin infections must not be present in the treatment area.

  • If you suffer from herpes (applicable to treatment area), preventative measures are recommend.

  • Follow the pre and post-care instructions provided by the clinic.

  • Inform the practitioner of any medications, medical conditions, or recent procedures before the treatment.

Will Microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion is generally considered pain free for most people. You may feel mild suction and a sensation similar to touching light sand paper. but it is not typically painful.

Can I do other treatments with Microdermabrasion?

Yes, you can enhance your microdermabrasion results by adding on additional treatments such as extractions and blackhead removal, LED light therapy, and professional strength recovery masks. These additional treatments can further improve your skin and address other concerns.
