PREPARING TO QUIT

You must prepare, it is important to be ready to quit.
This is, as you know, very tough to quit. You must be totally committed to becoming a non-smoker. In the end the chances for your success are up to you. You must want this change and be doing it for yourself. Even after your withdrawal from nicotine has ended you may have psychological triggers for quite some time. You must persevere and believe in yourself.

You may not be ready to quit if…
  1. You don’t think you will succeed.
  2. You think you like smoking.
  3. You have feelings of dread and foreboding as your quit date approaches.
  4. You are feeling nervous and on edge about quitting.
  5. You feel like your saying goodbye to your best friend.
  6. The thought of never having another cigarette seems unthinkable.
You may be ready to quit if…
  1. You are able to see yourself in your smoke free life.
  2. You simply can’t wait to be smoke free.
  3. You are excited to become a non-smoker.
  4. You have high expectations of success.
  5. You are looking forward to your quit date.
  6. You are thinking about the benefits of being a non-smoker.
Preparation steps:
  1. Pick a quit date. You date should be no longer that 2 weeks away. Try to avoid a date that you know will be followed by times of stress.
  2. Make a list of the pros and cons to smoking and keep this list to review the benefits of quitting.
  3. Make a list of the things that cause you to trigger your need for cigarettes and try to change them. Instead of waking up and smoking try waking up and brushing your teeth or after a meal try a walk or other activity. The more triggers you can identify and change, the better. These changes don’t have to be permanent, just enough to make it through the most difficult time at the beginning.
  4. Make sure you have water, fruit juices, Cinnamon candies, gum, stir straws, etc. (we will give you a list of suggested products)
  5. Tell all of your friends and family that your quitting and when. (a strong support group increases your chances for success)
  6. Clean house – Flush, yes flush, all cigarette butts and half cigarettes, leaving none in your waste cans. Wash all ash trays and store away or throw them out. On the day of your appointment destroy any remaining packs or single cigarettes you may have left.
  7. Have you ceremonial last cigarette at least 3 to 4 hours before coming in for your appointment.
THERE IS NO REASON FOR YOU TO HAVE CIGARETTES IN YOUR POSSESION AFTER YOUR THERAPY HAS BEGUN. IF YOU THINK YOU NEED TO KEEP ANY, EVEN ONE, YOU ARE MOST LIKELY NOT READY TO STOP SMOKING. NO ONE WHO KEEPS ANY CIGARETTES AFTER THEIR THERAPY HAS BEGUN HAS SUCCESSFULLY STOPPED SMOKING!!!
