LASER THERAPY FAQ What is the history of laser therapy? The word “laser” is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The theory was first described by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) who paved the way for the development of the therapeutic laser. The first low-level therapeutic laser was developed in 1962. By the end of the 1960s Endre Mester in Hungary was reporting an improved healing of wounds through low level laser radiation and since then, scientists and doctors around the world have been using laser light to treat conditions that can affect all age groups. What is low level laser light? Low level laser light is compressed light of a wavelength from the cold, red part of the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. It is different from natural light in that it is one precise color; it is coherent (travels in a straight line), monochromatic (single wavelength) and polarized (concentrates its beam in a defined location or spot). Why use low level laser light? Low level laser light properties allow laser light to penetrate the surface of the skin with no heating effect, no damage to the skin and no known side effects. Rather, laser light directs light energy to the body’s cells which the cells then convert into chemical energy to promote natural healing and pain relief. Low level lasers also supply energy to the body in the form of non-thermal photons of light. When low level laser light waves penetrate deeply into the skin, they optimize the immune responses of our blood. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is a scientific fact that light transmitted to the blood in this way has a positive effect throughout the whole body, supplying vital oxygen and energy to every cell. How does the smoke cessation therapy work? Our Smoking cessation treatments are designed to eliminate the pain and discomforts associated with withdrawal symptoms, and are provided under the supervision of a physician. We use Class 3 lasers cleared for use in the U.S. by the F.D.A. they cannot burn or harm your skin. We stimulate trigger points located on the face hands and ears. The stimulation is completely painless, safe, effective and side effect free. The stimulation creates a release of your bodies own natural chemicals. These are the same chemicals that are released when you smoke. The difference is that when you smoke the chemicals are released for a few minutes, and a short time later you have withdrawal symptoms, causing you to smoke again because the body needs or desires another release of the chemicals. When you receive Fresh Start Laser Therapy these same chemicals are released for a sustained period of time. Therefore, you are able to stop smoking without the pain and discomfort of withdrawal symptoms. The body does not create the withdrawal symptoms because the chemicals it needs are already present. How long does the therapy take? The initial therapy session takes between 45 minutes to an hour, including a consultation. All subsequent follow-up therapy sessions, if needed, take 20 - 25 minutes on average. Is the therapy performed by a doctor? Our office operates under the supervision of a medical director and a certified laser technician will perform the therapy. Is Laser Therapy safe? Yes. Low level laser therapy is a safe, painless and medication-free treatment. It has been used in England, Canada and Europe for over 20 years with no documented adverse side effects. In the United States, laser therapy devices have been classified by the FDA as "non-significant risk medical devices" and have received pre-market authorization. Due to the low level, nonthermal nature of the laser, there is no tissue destruction or other hazards that you would find associated with higher powered lasers. Can you treat me if I have a medical condition? Those with the following medical conditions can not proceed with laser therapy: - patients with any form of cancer - patients undergoing radiation - pregnant women, and - patients using immune suppressant or anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients with pace makers must get doctor approval and those who are sensitive to light (photosensitivity) will be tested for approval. Epileptic patients may be treated with laser therapy only after precautionary measures are taken. Please contact your doctor if you have a question about the use of laser therapy with any other medical condition. How much does the treatment cost?
In all cases there are no refunds for rendered services. What forms of payment do you accept? Our office accepts check, cash and credit card (including MasterCard, Discover, Visa and American Express). Is Laser Therapy covered by insurance? Laser therapy is not covered by medical Insurance. The cost of the therapy is roughly the same amount the average smoker spends on 1 month’s cigarettes. Give yourself or someone you love a Fresh Start, call 201-773-8148 today! |
